The Netflix series 13 Reasons Why is one of several projects that have been given the go-ahead to resume production after being shut down by the recent California wildfires. The most serious of these fires, the Camp Fire, consumed over 150,000 acres and claimed 86 lives as it raged over several weeks in November.

Less serious than the cost in human life and property was the effect the fires had on production of various Hollywood projects located in the area. Most hard-hit was the Paramount Ranch, a standing location used by shows like Westworld, which was destroyed in November during the Woolsey fire. That same fire also claimed many homes in Malibu, including one owned by Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, and threatened but did not destroy director Guillermo del Toro’s memorabilia-filled home dubbed “Bleak House.” In all, the fire burned over 90,000 acres and claimed three lives.

Now that the fires in California have been contained, Hollywood can begin cranking back up filming activities in the affected areas. As reported by The Wrap, Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why is one of the shows that has been given the go-ahead by authorities to resume production. The show has shooting locations in the city of Vallejo in Salano County, and had to suspend operations due to poor air quality caused by smoke from the Camp Fire 150 miles distant. Shooting on season 3 of the series is expected to wrap in February.

Based on the 1997 novel by Jay Asher, season 1 of 13 Reasons Why debuted on Netflix in 2017 and immediately became the subject of controversy due to its depiction of teen suicide. Despite calls by some to end the series after one season, Netflix pressed ahead with a second season, which garnered even more critical acclaim than season 1. Lead actress Katherine Langford was singled out for praise for her season 2 performance, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama. Due in large part to her work on the series, Langford has now launched a movie career, and will star in next year’s Avengers 4 in an undisclosed role.

Though 13 Reasons Why is indeed continuing for a third season, Langford herself will not be back. It remains to be seen how the series will continue without its lead actress and main character. Now at least, the acclaimed and controversial Netflix show is able to resume production after a brief hiatus imposed by one of the biggest disasters in California history.
