Better Call Saul season 5 will be released in February of 2020 meaning that the countdown has begun to next series of the incredibly successful Breaking Bad spin-off show. The series follows the life of Jimmy McGill before he becomes Saul Goodman.

The previous season showed us that the transformation from lawyer McGill to con-man Goodman was almost complete. Here are 10 things that we really want to see from the fifth installment of this already classic television show.

GUS EMPIRE BUILDING

Gus Fring has been re-introduced into this world of drug cartels and money laundering. Much earlier into his career, at this point in time Gus has still built quite the empire for himself and is in the process of expanding.

We’d love to see this process continue in season 5 as Gus finally arrives in the position we found him in during Breaking Bad. He’s about to take the drug market by storm and we want to follow that journey as his power grows.

JIMMY’S NEW CLIENTELE

Jimmy McGill may be dead based on the finale of the previous season. Jimmy is showing more and more characteristics associated with Saul Goodman and we want to see this pushed even further. It would be great to see a dramatic shift in his clientele.

We’d love to see Jimmy start to help more drug dealers and petty criminals as he continues to fall into this murky underworld. It’ll be entertaining to see how he navigates this new side of his business as he establishes what he can provide to this niche group.

KIM’S DEPARTURE

Kim, Jimmy’s girlfriend, is clearly disturbed by his new behavior. We know that Kim isn’t around in Breaking Bad so something clearly happens to remove her from the picture. There are two options. A heartbreaking death or the choice to leave.

Kim leaving on her own accord could actually be a far more powerful tool to showcase Jimmy’s downfall. He’d only have himself to blame and this could cause him to throw himself into this dangerous work even more.

MIKE CHALLENGED

Mike has often remained quite calm under pressure. Even when having to make tough emotional decisions, he still does what he must in order to provide for his family and survive. He’s struggled but we’ve never truly seen his back against the wall.

In the next season of the show, we really want to see Mike fully challenged. One of the most interesting parts of the last series was when Mike was forced to kill one of his few friends. These kinds of choices make the character far more compelling to watch.

BREAKING BAD CAMEOS

The show has already had numerous cameos and appearances from characters that we’d previously seen in Breaking Bad. The major characters of Saul, Mike, and Gus are, of course, all from the show, as are lesser characters such as Huell.

We’d love to see more appearances from these iconic characters. With talk of the twins and Lydia showing up in season 5, as well as the constant speculation that Walter White himself could appear at some stage, we’re excited about the many possibilities.

NO REDEMPTION

There’s a sense that a character like Jimmy should be redeemed in some way before he hits rock bottom. We’ve actually seen this on the show previously, but someone like Walter White was never fully redeemed for his many crimes.

We want Saul to also never emerge from the pit he’s fallen into. The Saul Goodman we find in Breaking Bad is certainly someone with very few redeemable qualities. To suddenly change the character in this show would be to lose sight of the final point in his journey.

HIGHER STAKES

The stakes of this show started out pretty low. They were mostly personal decisions and a few emotional conflicts. We can never fully fear for our titular character or many supporting players, because they show up later in Breaking Bad.

However, we’ve now become invested in the lives of other characters such as Nacho and Kim. Chuck’s death demonstrated that the stakes have been raised and we want this to continue. We want proper consequences for everything happening to these characters.

NEW CRIME LORDS

While we do love a cameo and for old foes to be brought back, there’s something especially interesting about bringing in a new crime lord. For a period of time, we’re unaware of who actually rules over the crime scene in the area.

Perhaps the next season of the show can introduce us to a new group that was leagues above the rest and how they fell to allow Gus and eventually Heisenberg to rise in their place. It would also allow for a couple of new and quirky character designs.

NACHO’S DEATH

Breaking Bad tried to find the most heartbreaking death imaginable and run with it. In Better Call Saul there is a character that could be redeemed for his past sins, but also ultimately pay the price. We think Nacho should die in the next season.

Much like Kim, we know he’s not around for the sequel show and so he leaves in one way or another. A death would actually be a really interesting conclusion to his character, after he’s scratched and clawed for so long it would be heartbreaking to see him die for his family.

SATISFYING CONCLUSION

Better Call Saul is quickly racing towards its conclusion. We know at some point it will catch up to Breaking Bad but we’re not sure at what stage this will happen. There’s every chance that the fifth installment could actually be the last.

If that is the case we’d love for there to be a really satisfying conclusion that wraps up any stories that have been left without solid endings, while soundly leading into the first season of Breaking Bad and Saul’s re-introduction into the world.
