Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts are two cinematic aspects of the Wizarding World, that have come from the talented mind of children’s author, J.K. Rowling. This movie universe will continue over the next few years as the Beasts franchise wraps up.
There’s plenty of other characters that could receive spin-offs though. Much like Newt Scamander, there are some characters from the lore of Harry Potter or even the other books and films themselves, that could have a solo franchise. Here are 10 of them!
YOUNG LILY AND JAMES
Lily and James Potter are one of the largest parts of Harry’s story, even though we never really meet them. There have been flashbacks in the films and parts of the books dedicated to these two characters, but we want them fleshed out further.
The days of James’ gang and the young romance between him and Lily would be interesting to see. We’ve seen this told from Snape’s point of view but we know there’s a lot more to dissect and explore during this period of time.
HERMIONE GRANGER
Hermione Granger has been well established in the future as a leading politician and a very talented witch. She becomes Minister for Magic in the highlight of her career and we can’t help but want to see that story.
A political drama set within this world of wizards would be something completely new. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but with the story centered around the well-known character of Hermione, there are real personal stakes with this one.
ALBUS SEVERUS POTTER
Albus Severus Potter has already had quite a lot written about him so it makes sense he gets a solo film in the future, primarily based on the work in the Cursed Child. There’s something fundamentally unique about this character.
There’s so much potential here, not only for a film based on the play but even to follow Albus further through his school years. The Slytherin Potter is different from the rest of his family, yet he is still living up to the name and is a remarkable wizard.
NICOLAS FLAMMEL
Nicolas Flammel is one of the major connections between the two main franchises, after appearing in the last Fantastic Beasts film. The reason may have been to flesh out the lore a bit more, or perhaps to set something else up.
Such an old man has probably had a lot of different adventures on his path to immortality. There is a story to tell there, one that passes through most generations of wizards, therefore making the character of Flammel a more compelling one to follow.
BELLATRIX LESTRANGE
Bellatrix is completely erratic and tied to her dark family history. Her own background is quite peculiar and we want to know how she eventually came to the side of Voldemort as one of the most violent witches in history.
There are not many villains in the Harry Potter universe who deserve a proper spin-off but Bellatrix is absolutely one of them. There’s actually so much we don’t know that any writers would have plenty of opportunities to flesh out her character further.
KINGSLEY SHACKLEBOLT
Kingsley Shacklebolt is one of the unsung heroes of the whole Harry Potter saga. He was a key part of the success of Dumbledore’s Army, due to all his hard work in the ministry of magic. He was also one of the many wizards that fought Voldemort’s forces.
Kingsley’s history is almost completely unknown to us. He might not seem like the most obvious choice to be featured in a spin-off but that’s because he isn’t. Yet he might be the most interesting and well-positioned character to learn so much more about.
PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL
McGonagall is one of the most inspirational teachers at Hogwarts and has served as both the head of a house, deputy head and head of the school itself. She has a difficult career full of ups and downs and her life must be just the same.
No one gets to that kind of position in life without having a few stories to tell. We’ve seen McGonagall, or perhaps a relative of her, in the Fantastic Beasts sequel, so there’s some potential here to go back in time and see her life fully.
NEARLY HEADLESS NICK
Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t want to see Nick nearly lose his head? A historical wizarding adventure is bound to be a lot of fun, although it’s unlikely we’d see a young John Cleese in the role with some technological de-ageing.
Regardless, the hilarious character might be the key to taking us into a completely different time period, one that we’ve never considered visiting in this mysterious world. It could also see us introduced to the version of Merlin from this universe.
HAGRID
Hagrid’s spin-off really could be about anything. It could be about his childhood, his time at school getting accused of crimes, his time as a teacher, or perhaps even when he was looking for his half brother! There’s also the option of something completely different.
Regardless of where we go, Hagrid is a warm and loving character, who has encountered a lot of conflict throughout his life. The only thing holding this one back is the fact we are already seeing plenty of fantastical creatures on the big screen.
THE FOUNDERS
The founders of Hogwarts have a huge part to play in this whole saga, so perhaps it makes sense to take it back to the beginning. The four legendary houses are named after these creators, but what’s the tale behind the making of Hogwarts?
We know there’s secrets, betrayal, differing viewpoints and likely a lot of magic. There’s definitely a movie in there somewhere and perhaps even a series that culminates in the creation of the iconic school and of course the Chamber of Secrets.
